Picasso’s Secret

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” - Pablo Picasso

Picasso’s work is legendary. He is easily recognized as one of the most influential artists of all time and his name is synonymous with greatness. Scholars have analyzed his work and his life in order to decipher his secrets to success. A combination of good teachers, talent, persistence, opportunity and luck are all certainly ingredients that brought his visions to such great heights, but there was also one amazing quality that he kept throughout his life. Picasso knew how to play like a child.

Picasso was able to keep a child-like mentality as he developed his craft. He was able to imagine what wasn’t visible, he was able to focus on minute tasks for prolonged periods of time, and he was able to laugh about the absurdities of life. Why is it that as we get older, we forget how to play?

Sure, the pressures of our societal obligations make us act with more seriousness sometimes. Perhaps the perceived judgements from others prevent us from being our authentic selves, or we tone things down in order to fit in. Children are largely unaware of these sorts of worries. Kids just be. They just do.

Some of the most influential people in our lives have been able to remain kids with their approach to things. To have fun and to play. To not fear the consequences of failure but to try with all your heart to enjoy the moment. That is exactly what they do. They immerse themselves in the moment until their fun in interrupted by Mom’s call for dinner or the school bell.

When we think of our current interests, they may have gone in a total different direction than when we were kids, but our bet is that if you do now what you enjoyed when you were a kid, it will be a whole lot of fun. We don’t all have to strive to be Picasso. Comparison is certainly a quick way to end our happiness. What we can do is learn from Picasso’s mentality. We can all re-visit the joys of playing and not being concerned with what the rest of the world may think of us.

Whatever it is that brings back that childhood zest, do it regularly. We can all enjoy our days that much more if we just continue to play. Imagine, create, immerse and restart!

Let’s change the way we travel, together
