After experimenting with a small fast from food, which is challenging enough itself, let alone in another country, it seems suitable to write this week about the world’s most savoured activity.
Everybody admits it, food is definitely one of the most fun things about daily life and especially travel. We curiously seek out local gems in the hopes that somehow we will discover the true secrets of a culture. There is a sense that we have found more than just a delicious experience, but something that is timelessly true. We become drawn into the present moment, our senses awaken, and time dissipates as we indulge in our survival’s number one leisure.
It doesn’t matter where you are, good food is good food. “Made with Love” is instantly recognizable because the love isn’t only found in the taste, but also felt in the environment and in the presentation. The thought that goes behind our pleasurable nourishment is the result of countless trial and error. Hours and hours have been poured into a chef’s relationship with the elements. They have learned to apply the techniques of those before them who were entrusted with keeping the species alive.
Food brings people together. In between mouthfuls, we discuss the world around us. We share, we listen, and partake in connected moments of relaxation. Eating is at the heart of our daily actions and we have become pretty good at it. Sometimes though, we get a bit sloppy, and we don’t mean dropping mustard on our shirts, we are referring to mindfulness.
We live in times of immense variety. It is not entirely impossible to eat a different country's cuisine for every meal. Eating, especially in the western world, can be taken for granted. Sometimes we eat fast, or on the run. We chew on products that have been transported half-way around the world and can be quick to complain about the shortage of Avocado in our colorful supermarkets. The majority of us don’t have to grow our own food, or even cook. We simply have an abundant access of resources at our finger tips and we get to eat 1000 times better than the classical Kings and Queens of Europe.
Oh…and who hasn’t noticed the almost mandatory new cutlery item that every person brings with them, the cell-phone. Our distractions are robbing us from the pure comforts that our ancestors were dreaming to achieve.
Don’t get us wrong, we are all for enjoying our present day fortunes. On our trips we set up culinary experiences so that you can eat and share with locals, or even learn how to cook. There is nothing better than sharing a freshly made meal with another human. What we want to encourage is presence. Be in the activity that you are taking part of. Think about how long it may have taken for those vegetables to grow, or maybe who had to harvest them. Engage with the person that is in front of and allow yourself to forget about everything else for a moment.
The world is moving fast, but we think that we should put in an effort to keep somethings slow. Eating luckily gives the opportunity to do so everyday.
