Trust Yourself

“To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don’t grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.” - Alan Watts

Sometimes things don’t always go as planned. It isn’t easy for a travel company to admit this, but recently while traveling between northern Chile and southern Chile, I missed my flight because I had a nap in the airport. Oh the irony, the embarrassment, the stupidity! What was I going to do? I had made plans to go to the south of Patagonia and explore some amazing mountain ranges and now both my wallet and my time pressure cooker were certainly being put to the test.

The Lifestyle Project doesn’t panic though, we adapt to the situation and find solutions. Instead of letting my emotions take over the situation, I simply took a breathe and stepped back to assess the situation. I would have to figure out a nice alternative to my original plans without wasting too much time, and that is exactly what I did! After looking up the next flights and realizing that it was going to cost me a few days, I began talking with a few locals about their favorite spots to go. I quickly gathered up some useful tips and used some swift flight research in order to start mapping out my route. Though I work the research in a suavy-smooth way, the most important thing I did in the whole process was trust myself. I began to trust my ability to adapt, to organize, to find accommodations, to talk to locals, and to ultimately be alright, regardless of the outcome.

I bought the cheapest flight that I could find going south, and just started to go with flow. The benefits of not being locked into any plans when you are traveling are plentiful. Essentially, your world of possibilities gets opened up in incredible ways. You begin to hear about hidden gems from others that you never would have found otherwise. If you like a place, you can stay longer, if you don’t you can move on. The best part is, that anything can happen, and the only thing that dictates how you will interpret your whole experience is the mindset you choose to take on. You can never do it all, so you just have to be happy with what you can do.

I choose to own the moment and trust that where I was going was going to be the right place. Upon arriving in Puerto Montt, Chile, I was greeted with a handful of options. My chilean friends informed me about the beautiful surrounding area and a few different angles I could take to getting to my original destination of Punta Arenas. I was ready to explore and see what this wonderful coastline had to offer. Eventually I would get where I thought I needed to go. As I took my bus in from the airport to the center of the city, I spoke with someone on the bus and well, when you have an open mind, you are open to suggestions. He told me that I should check out Bariloche, Argentina. It would be a 7 hour bus ride, but his description sounded lovely enough for me to bite. So, so long Chile, and buenos dias Argentina!

Bariloche, a place I had never even heard of until 2 weeks ago, has been one of the best places I have visited so far. It is a gorgeous small European ski town on a glimmering lake surrounded by white snow-capped mountains. Imagine the hiking of Vancouver Island, the coziness of Banff, and the beer of Germany all rolled up into a ball of sugary Latino passion. Locals are very kind and helpful, there are endless options for engaging with nature and here, they make very good chocolate! Aside from the many pleasant surprises that the geography has provided me with, I have met some incredibly interesting people. It has only been 6 days, and I feel like I have lived here for 2 months.

Travel brings many different experiences to all of us. We work in the business of planning, and we care about looking after the details so that these type of problems don’t occur when you are on a trip. The truth is, we are not perfect and everyone knows that anything can happen. That is life. It is how we decide to react and find solutions to these problems that make us a trust worthy company. That is our side of the bargain.

Your side is to trust yourself.

Trust the journey because with the right mentality, the universe will bring you exactly where you need to be.

Let’s change the way we travel, together.
