Moving To A New City

When you move to a new city, there are a string of emotions. It can be extremely exciting but also a little bit nerve racking as you realize that there are just so many things you need to figure out in order to get yourself together. Where are you going to live? How are you going to get around? How will you meet people? 

 

Indeed starting over isn’t an easy task. It requires stepping into the unknown and out of your comfort zone. After all, every city operates differently, and every culture has a different set of behaviors. It can all be a bit daunting and there is always going to be a bit of a doubt if you are paying too much for something or if you are living in the right area. All of this can seem like a bit much, and that is why The Lifestyle Project will offer anybody moving to a new city a free start up guide. Just let us know and we will be happy to help.  

 

If you want to go at on your own, here are a few alternative approaches as to how you can feel at home a little bit faster in your new city.

 

There is obviously a lot more things to be excited about when moving to a new city than to be fearful of. One of the core themes for our philosophy is that you need to follow your interests.  Meetup.com is a great tool to find new friends and groups of like minded people. It allows you to carefully select your interests and gives you access to events that you might find interesting. There is everything from acting workshops to wine tastings and poetry circles.  Join a few groups and test the waters to see if anything grabs your attention. There is very little consequence if you decide not to continue going. 

 

Focus on fitness. First off, there is nothing more exciting than exploring a city by foot or bicycle if you have access. Whether you decide to go for a leisurely stroll, or throw on your jogging shoes, it is an amazing way to orientate yourself in your new neighborhood. Also, buy signing up for a gym or a fitness class, you will be able to add in some structure to your new life. Aside from meeting like-minded people, you are also just going to feel good and this will definitely help offset the discomforts of moving to a new place. 

 

We have mentioned in the past to take a language course if you are going to a different country, so we won’t stress too much about that, but definitely we want to emphasize the importance of getting involved with the arts. Cities are constantly putting on free events and are encouraging their citizens to discover the cultural side of things. By going to galleries and museums, not only will you be able to enjoy the works of others, but you may even become inspired to take up a new hobby of your own. It could be painting, or it could be photography, but by adding in a new skill to your life, your new city will seem that much more exciting. Also, as you are already in transition, it is the perfect time to take up a new skill, because it is likely that you are reorganizing your daily routines a little bit anyways. 

 

Take your time. You are never going to be able to do it all, and cities always have a lot of things going on. Whether you are permanently moving to a new city or just going for a month or two, you will be able to enjoy yourself much more if you just slow things down.  It is easy to want to sign up for everything and get involved with it all, but this is an easy way to burnout out as well. Find a balance by selecting a few events per week and ease into it. As time goes on, you will always be able to do more things. And sometimes, it is just nice to get to know a few people really well as opposed to 1000 people just for a moment.
